Connecticut Sun 2024 Draft Recap

By DJ Harding

After ending last season with a semi finals loss to the New York Liberty the Sun look to bounce back and contend this season. Connecticut went into draft night with four selections with picks 10, 19, 22, and 34.

Connecticut used their 10th overall selection to draft Leila Lacan, selecting the French point guard who was the second international player off the board. Lacan played four years in France with two seasons going first to Pole France and then playing for the Angers. Lacan also played from the French FIBA national team at the U16, U18, and U19 levels

General Manager Taylor said “We don’t expect her to come over her this year due to the Olympics but we think she is the second best guard in the draft. We are really excited to draft her at 10th overall.”

Connecticut then had two picks in the second round starting with pick 19 which the Sun used to select Taiyanna Jackson, a center out of Kansas. Jackson played three seasons at Kansas and was a transfer from Trinity Valley Community College where she began her college career.

Connecticut then a few selections later drafted Helena Pueyo, a point guard from Arizona. Pueyo spent all five seasons with the Wildcats and even picked up All Pac-12 and Pac-12 Defensive honors in her final season with the Wildcats.

Coach White then commented on Pueyo saying “Looking for someone who can be a ball mover in our system and play defense especially being terrific at getting steals makes her a great fit.”

Connecticut used their final selection on Abbey Psu, a guard from the University of Columbia. The Ivy League product was the only third round selection made by the Sun and was the only Ivy League product in the entire 2024 draft.

Manager Taylor said “We’ve followed Abbey all year long and she’s a very good shooter and has a high ceiling and is more than just a shooter.”

The Connecticut Sun play their lone preseason game on Thursday May 9 at home against the New York Liberty before beginning the regular season facing the Indiana Fever on May 14 in Mohegan Sun arena.
